Frequent dysmenorrhea can be improved by adjusting diet, hot compress, moderate exercise, drug treatment and traditional Chinese medicine conditioning. Dysmenorrhea may be related to abnormal hormone levels, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, adenomyosis, mental stress and other factors.

    1. Adjust your diet

Avoid raw, cold, and spicy foods during menstruation. Drinking brown sugar ginger tea or warm honey water in moderation can help relieve uterine cramps. Increasing foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as deep-sea fish and reducing caffeine intake can reduce prostaglandin synthesis and reduce pain. Get your daily dose of magnesium from nuts or dark green vegetables.

    2. Hot compress care

Place a hot water bottle or baby warmer at about 40°C on the lower abdomen for 15-20 minutes each time, repeat 2-3 times a day. Hot compress can promote pelvic blood circulation and relax uterine smooth muscle, which is more effective in treating primary dysmenorrhea. Be careful to avoid burns and use gentle clockwise abdominal massage.

    3. Moderate exercise

Start doing 30 minutes of low-intensity aerobic exercise every day one week before your period, such as yoga cat pose, slow walking or swimming. Exercise can stimulate endorphin secretion and reduce prostaglandin production, but strenuous exercise should be avoided to aggravate pelvic congestion. Kegel exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, and long-term persistence can improve menstrual discomfort.

    4. Drug treatment

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules and diclofenac sodium suppositories can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis and need to be used under the guidance of a doctor in the early stages of pain. For patients with endometriosis, doctors may recommend the use of short-acting contraceptive pills such as drospirenone and ethinylestradiol tablets to regulate their cycles. In severe cases, injectable leuprolide acetate microspheres may be considered.

    5. Traditional Chinese Medicine Conditioning

Moxibustion at Guanyuan and Sanyinjiao points for 15 minutes each time, once every other day for three months, can warm the menstrual flow and dispel cold. Chinese patent medicines such as Danggui Shaoyao Powder and Shaofu Zhuyu Granules need to be used based on syndrome differentiation and are suitable for dysmenorrhea due to qi stagnation and blood stasis. Acupuncture treatment is recommended to start one week before menstruation and stimulate the uterus, endocrine and other auricular points 2-3 times a week.

Establish a menstrual cycle record sheet to monitor pain level and duration. Make sure to sleep 7-8 hours a day during menstruation, and wear loose clothing to reduce abdominal compression. If the pain is accompanied by abnormal menstrual flow, fever or irregular bleeding, gynecological ultrasound and six hormone examinations need to be performed promptly. Patients with long-term dysmenorrhea are recommended to have a pelvic examination once a year to rule out organic diseases.
