In most general hospitals, prenatal care clinics belong to the specialized nursing clinics under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (obstetrics sub-department) and are not independent first-level departments. However, the classification of hospitals at different levels and with different attributes may be different. Some grassroots maternal and child institutions will also include it within the service scope of the maternal and child health department.
Last week, when I was helping at the outpatient consultation desk, I met a little girl who was 14 weeks pregnant. She was holding the registration form so anxiously that her eyes were red. She said that she had been waiting in line for the obstetrician specialist all morning and wanted to ask whether she should stop taking iron supplements for constipation and whether she could drink yogurt because of the recent flatulence. But when it was her turn, the doctor was busy prescribing the next screening form and dismissed her in two sentences. I pointed her in the direction of the prenatal care clinic opposite and asked her to go in and ask. Within half an hour, she jumped out and said that not only did she understand the precautions for taking supplements, but she also asked her clearly about how to control her weight in the second trimester and whether she could do yoga for pregnant women. She also said that if she had known about this place, she would not have grabbed the expert number.
Don’t think that this clinic is a “auxiliary job”. The division of labor between it and the general obstetrics clinic is actually very clear. The core of general obstetric clinics is the medical work that clinicians are responsible for: assessment of pregnancy status, treatment of abnormal pregnancy, formulation of prenatal care plans, intervention of pregnancy complications, etc. Any need for diagnosis, prescription of medicines, and examinations must be found in obstetric clinics. Most of the prenatal care clinic staff are specialist nurses and senior midwives with more than 5 years of obstetric clinical experience. Some well-equipped hospitals will also be equipped with full-time clinical nutritionists, who focus on content that is more practical guidance: the correct posture for counting fetal movements, glucose tolerance. How to adjust your diet in the previous week, how to practice Lamaze breathing in the third trimester, preparations for breastfeeding, and even trivial questions such as which abdominal support belt to choose for low back pain and whether to do pelvic floor muscle prepositioning training for urinary leakage, you can get much more detailed answers here than in ordinary clinics.
Of course, there are exceptions. When I went to the community health service center to do maternal and child education last month, I discovered that many grassroots institutions did not have independent obstetrics departments, so they would integrate prenatal care-related services into the maternal and child protection departments, and provide follow-up guidance to pregnant mothers in the jurisdiction after setting up files. In essence, the service content provided is similar, but the division of departments is adjusted according to the actual structure of the hospital.
Speaking of which, quite a few pregnant mothers don’t know that this clinic exists. If the prenatal check-up indicators are normal next time, but if I have a lot of trivial questions to ask during pregnancy, I can directly call the prenatal care clinic. Most of them have sufficient sources and can talk thoroughly. Isn’t it quite practical?
