At present, the mainstream specialized fitness programs are mainly derived from the four major directions of strength improvement, endurance enhancement, functional recovery, and special sports performance improvement. The ones that are more exposed to the public include powerlifting, CrossFit comprehensive physical fitness, Pilates equipment specialization, marathon special training, boxing/Muay Thai specialization, postpartum recovery specialization, youth physical fitness specialization, and pre-match special training supporting niche sports such as skiing, surfing, and cycling that have become popular in the past two years.
I have been working hard in the fitness industry for almost 8 years. At the beginning, I was vague about the concept of "specialty". I thought it was just focusing on one project and practicing to death? Later, it took the physical coach who retired from the provincial team more than half a year to understand that the core difference between specialized fitness and general fitness is that the goal is extremely focused and there are no unnecessary movements. Take the amateur running circle that I often come into contact with as an example. Last year, a runner wanted to run the North Marathon 330. He used to practice blindly and always hit the wall at 30 kilometers. Later, he found a special marathon coach. In the training plan, he cut off half of the heavy leg press that he loved to do before, and added a lot of plantar strength training, heart rate control running and core anti-rotation training. After more than three months, he achieved a PB of 24 minutes. When he crossed the line, he didn't even pump his legs.
In fact, the boundaries of specialized fitness in the industry are not yet completely unified. Most coaches from the older generation of competitive sports believe that only those that serve the competition goals of professional athletes are considered specialized. The targeted needs of ordinary people can only be regarded as "focused regular training." But now more young practitioners are more willing to include segmented public needs into the scope of specialization. After all, it is too much nowadays. Many people have very clear training goals: mothers who have just given birth need to solve the problems of rectus abdominis separation and urinary leakage, office workers need to improve the protruding waist and rounded shoulders caused by sitting for many years, and there are even parents who specifically seek coaches to provide special training for their children in sports for the high school entrance examination. These projects with strong goal orientation and highly matched training content are essentially a type of specialized fitness.
Speaking of which, there is no need to think that specialized fitness is far away from me. There is an office girl next to me who always felt pain in her shoulders and necks before that she could not lift her arms. She went to the hospital and took a X-ray and said that the problem was no big problem but muscle strain. She signed up for a small class specializing in shoulder and neck rehabilitation. After practicing for less than 10 times, the pain was basically gone. It was much more efficient than her previous random stretching online. To put it bluntly, ordinary fitness is like a big pot of soup stewed at home, with a little bit of every nutrition. Special fitness is like a customized prescription to suit your needs. It completely follows your needs. There is no need to worry about whether it is "orthodox" or not. It is good if it can solve the problem.
