I still have brown discharge after menstruation

Brown discharge after menstruation is mostly normal and may be related to a small amount of residual menstrual blood or delayed endometrial shedding. If it is accompanied by abdominal pain, odor and other symptoms, you need to be alert to gynecological inflammation or endocrine disorders.

It is common for brown discharge to appear within 1-3 days after the end of the menstrual cycle. This is a sign of uterine contractions expelling residual menstrual blood. At this time, the secretion is usually small and odorless, and will gradually turn into normal leucorrhea. In some women, progesterone declines slowly due to luteal corpus insufficiency, which may prolong the shedding of the endometrium and cause brown discharge that lasts for 3-5 days. Changes in secretion properties can be observed daily, keep the perineum clean, and avoid strenuous exercise.

If brown discharge lasts for more than 7 days or is accompanied by lower abdominal pain, itching and odor, it may be related to endometritis, cervical polyps and other lesions. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome may experience persistent spotting after menstruation due to ovulation disorders. Women who have an IUD inserted are also prone to brown discharge during periods. In this case, the cause needs to be diagnosed through gynecological examination, hormone testing or ultrasound.

It is recommended to choose cotton breathable underwear and change it daily, and avoid bathing and sex during menstruation. If the discharge is accompanied by fever or abnormal bleeding, vaginal discharge examination and gynecological ultrasound should be performed promptly. When women over 40 years old have recurrent postmenstrual bleeding, endometrial lesions need to be ruled out.
